William Leslie Campbell (1955-2025) exemplified the spirit of Manitoba agriculture through five decades of unwavering dedication to farming, livestock breeding, and agricultural leadership. Born in Boissevain in 1955, Bill was a fourth-generation farmer who transformed his family’s 1,700-acre grain operation and 860 acres of pastureland into a model of agricultural excellence, earning recognition as both a Century and Heritage Farm through The Manitoba Farm Family Recognition Program.
Bill’s passion for Limousin cattle breeding began in 1974 when he and his father Glen purchased their first purebreds from the Brandon Research Station. This launched a lifelong journey that would see Campbell Limousin become a nationally recognized operation, marketing genetics across Canada and internationally to Brazil and Mexico. His commitment to breed advancement was demonstrated through over 50 years of service with the Manitoba Limousin Association (MLA) and Canadian Limousin Association (CLA), including serving as President of both organizations.
As an agricultural leader, Bill’s influence extended far beyond his farm gate. He served as President of Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP) from 2018-2023 and was a longtime member of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture Board of Directors. His advocacy for sustainable farming practices and rural communities shaped agricultural policy at provincial and national levels. Bill was particularly known for his ability to communicate complex agricultural issues with clarity and conviction, earning respect as a tireless mentor to young farmers.
Bill’s community involvement was legendary. He contributed to local recreation boards, served 25 years on the veterinary board, led 4-H clubs, and chaired the Minto Restaurant Committee for consecutive years. His dedication to agricultural education and youth development touched countless lives, as he shared his knowledge and passion with the next generation of farmers.
Throughout his career, Bill received numerous honors including the Canadian Limousin Award of Distinction (2016), the Manitoba Limousin Association Ambassador Award (2019), and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences Certificate of Merit (2018). His cattle achieved Grand Champion status at major shows including the Canadian Western Agribition and Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
Bill Campbell lived by country values- standing up for what he believed in and putting family, farming, and rural life first. His heart was invested in the sustainability and viability of agriculture and the families involved. As one colleague noted, he was “the very definition of a happy warrior, bringing earnestness and authenticity everywhere he went.”
Bill Campbell’s legacy is one of passionate advocacy, innovative farming practices, and selfless service to the agricultural community. His contributions will continue to benefit Manitoba agriculture for generations to come.
